The refurbishment will boost the resort's business and meeting facilities while expanding its existing recreational facilities.
A five-year makeover plan has been approved for Downtown East, a recreational water theme park cum resort located in eastern Singapore. The refurbishment will cost SGD 200 million and will take place over two phases, with work commencing in Q4 2012, said owner NTUC Club.
Occupying a site that is about the size of 10 footballs fields, Downtown East will house a brand new Costa Sands Resort. At the same time, it will expand its water theme park while improving convention and meeting facilities.
Phase One of the makeover will include the construction of the new Costa Sands Resorts with a reported gross development value of SGD 90 million. The resort will extend into space previously occupied by the Escape theme park.
It will offer a total of 400 rooms, with 72 rooms to be completed by 2013. The remaining 328 rooms will be launched in 2014.
In addition, Phase One will also see the expansion of the existing water theme park Wild Wild Wet into a 4 ha recreation feature. As part of the expansion, six new attractions will be added to the popular facility.
In Phase Two of the revamp, NTUC Club will focus on boosting Downtown East's attractiveness for business travellers. A convention and meeting facility will be added, with a targeted completion date of 2017. Once completed, Downtown East will boast a multi-purpose hall with a capacity of 3,000, as well as an amphitheatre capable of seating 1,000.
"As the aspirations of Singaporeans change, we understand that there is a need for us to update our offerings so that members and the public can continue to enjoy top-notch standards of affordable recreational facilities and leisure options," said Yeo Khee Leng, Chief Executive Officer of NTUC Club.
